Sometimes I wonder …

… if at least some conservatives think that I have spent more than the last 25 years of my life in the professional study of American politics not because I find them endlessly fascinating and want to understand them in all their complexity, or because I hope to be part of the long conversation that has helped at least some of the United States’ policies live up to its promises, but because I am engaged in a conspiracy to convert the United States into a crypto-fascist state where only the values I hold can be publicly uttered or practiced by anyone, preferably under the leadership of a charismatic Kenyan anti-Christ.

Then I realize that I am just being silly: that of course that’s what at least some conservatives think about my career as a professional student of American politics. So then I stop wondering and go on about my day. Or evening.
