First, really: it’s Dances With Wolves. So Dances got two nominations for best picture.
Second, does no one get that the Dances peoples lost? Americans don’t give up in their efforts to conquer. They come back with more technology and more people. What matters is how the Avatar people win the second battle … the one when the Americans bring the nukes.
