Thomas Nast’s 1870 cartoon suggesting the risk of a Catholic takeover of America, its foreign values and foreign potentates taking control of “real” America by merging state and church under papal control. I particularly like the apparently Irish (and thus Catholic) thug (think Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York) threatening Lady Liberty.
